Dreaming of a wild meadow

I have long admired and respected farmers that have chosen to transform many of their fields back into Wild Meadows, it is nice to see wildlife getting a chance and to see our once native wild meadows being brought back to life.
The vibrant spectacle of wild flowers such as the humble poppy and wild daisy carpeting rejuvenated meadows across the country is truly a wonderful sight.
Seeing these wild and natural displays as I go on my weekend walks in the countryside, has given me inspiration to try and attempt in growing my own small meadow in my garden. Well I started this about 4 weeks ago and began by removing all the turf and also the some of the top soil, now the soil underneath was clay heavy so I had to give it a really good rake to try and break it up and rake it gently so that the soil became fine on the surface to give the seeds a chance to root, as clay soil can become very clumpy and sticky.
I bought a 200g bag mix of wild flower and grass seeds from Wiggly Wigglers (internet), for about £6 worth. I spread the seeds evenly over the surface of the soil and then very gently raked the seeds just under the surface of the soil and then lightly watered them.
4 weeks on from sowing the seeds I have now got a few shoots appearing all over the dirt patch that is my front garden, however I am a little concerned by the appearance of the soil as it is becoming clumpy again and now wish I had mixed some compost or grit in with my clay type soil to break it up more; seeing that the weather is now starting to become more warmer I hope that the remaining seeds will start to sprout and break through the soil. If anyone has any experience in planting and creating wild meadows then any feedback would be much appreciated on my sowing technique about i.e. have I done it correct?
I will have to wait and see how my meadow develops and keep you updated.
