Conservation begins at home

Well today i decided to end my monthly subscription with the World Wildlife Fund; i have been giving them my monthly monies now for a good while, but lately i have been wondering where my hard earned cash is actually going to?

I know Eco-organisations like the WWF and Friends of the Earth mean well and have their hearts in the right place, but i have been thinking hard about how these organisations are spending my small contributions (its all i can afford) i give every month; now the small amount i give is not much, but whenever i see a WWF, FOE or Greenpeace advert, i wonder if my small contribution is being swallowed up in their big advertisement campaigns or on their admin staff and costs, i would rather have confirmation that my £20 a month is going straight to a project somewhere that is really needed and not swallowed up by their administration costs.

I’ve decided to spend my money on local environmental projects that would benefit wildlife conservation in my local area where i live; i have been looking at the cost of buying trees that i could plant in my nearest nature reserve and found out that i could buy 2 young Oak trees for the cost of the £20 that i would give to WWF, and at the same time know where my money is going to.

I am not saying that nobody should stop supporting the WWF or other similar organisations as they are well meaning and really do excellent work, but my personal preference at this moment is that it would be best to look after and conserve the environment and all its many wonders closer to home first; there are many species of plants and wildlife that need saving and preserving here in the UK and its here that i will concentrate my environmental priorities.

I will continue my support for the WWF by keeping their banner on my homepage of my website, and maybe in the near future i will resume my support for them financially but at the moment i believe there is real work to be done closer to home.
